The nuclear-powered Enterprise is the first aircraft carrier of its kind and is one of the largest ships ever built. This gigantic aircraft carrier was put into service on November 25, 1961. Eight water-cooled reactors generate a total power of 300,000 horsepower, allowing the ship to reach an average speed of 35 knots. The water displacement is 75,700 tons and the flight deck has a width of 76.8 meters. On average there are 414 officers and 4,260 crew members on board. Since the Enterprise is independent of external supplies thanks to its nuclear drive, large fuel depots are available for the onboard aircraft. The largest and most modern aircraft in the US Navy can be operated from the Enterprise.
