DESCRIPTION
Avro Lancaster BIII, Special, The Dambusters - Airfix A09007A
The Avro Lancaster served as a high-altitude night bomber targeting areas in Germany like the Ruhr, Berlin, and Hamburg. During the famous "Dambusters Raid", Wing Commander Guy Gibson led a squadron of nineteen modified aircraft that strategically targeted the Mohne, Sorpe, Ennepe, and Eder dams. These attacks led to breaches in the Mohne and Eder dams resulting in devastation to the German war effort. The breaches were accomplished with the use of Upkeep mines, also known as the 'bouncing bomb'. The bomb was unique due to the way it was dropped. The bomb would rotate prior to dropping and would skip along the surface. As it impacted the dam, the bomb would sink and then explode, causing the dam to rupture
